Innovative Task Of Udubaddawa Nenasala Telecentre (Empowering Grassroot)
Innovative Task Of Udubaddawa Nenasala Telecentre (Empowering Grassroot)
Udubaddawa Nisala Telecentre is in Srilanka. It is matter to happy that Telecentre.org Foundation and SPARK (the 4th Global Forum on Telecentres) are launching of the first ever Global Telecentre Awards. In Srilanka Information Communication Technology Agency Of Srilanka(ICTA) has already taken necessary steps to implement the TELECENTRE NETWORK at Grassroots level in island wide. In that case our telecentre was initiated 5th of October 2008 as Udubaddawa Nisala Telecentre. Udubaddawa NISALA telecentre is 566 Telecentre in Srilanka at Udubaddawa A.G.A. Division of Kurunegala district under the Srilankan 1000 telecentre project concept of the president of Srilanka and the government. With a large number of Distance Learning Education Centers, Empowering grass-root Level at Village Level our telecentre Specialized for empowering ICT and English Language. Udubaddawa NISALA Nenasala does multitasking duties for entire Public based on ICT.
We Udubaddawa Nenasala doing English Language development programme in above nenasala centres. That has been a good sustainable task to my telecentre. Because there is a strong link between ICT and English Language. And also still in Srilanka English literacy is in less than 50 percentages. So it is essential to increase that percentage whatever way we can. Not only that I have been able to give 20 job opportunities to unemployed youth in our area as English teachers. . Actually whole these opportunities given by this Valuable Telecentre Network. So I think introducing this kind of program to other world telecentre network they also able to take advantages of this. That was a great determination to us. When teaching English at the village level where situated our distance education centre in far away from the regional city and our teachers go to the separate centers day by day in weekdays and weekend where situated in temples, public halls and religious places. Our teachers use smart phones as tool of teaching.

Not only that we want to implement the IT training in good way from our telecentre. We study them and formed new IT courses to both kids and adults. And also we were able to do webinars (Skype conference) with the help of the resource persons from universities.

And also we udubaddawa telecentre is launching a new telecentre promoting program me. We nominated is as “propaganda road show task”. Here we have decorated a three wheeler for propaganda vehicle. I hope to make aware all rural public people about telecentre services and activities. And also already I have done several programmers at village level and villagers highly appreciated our program me to uplift the telecentre. In the other hand especially students get enjoy from our program me.
Before doing this kind of program me I found it is difficult to make aware the public. Especially village area people always busy with their day today works. So I find it easy to access the village area people by this task. And also by this task we normally go into their door steps and make aware all the services and activities done by Nisala telecentre.

That is a development bank registered under the central bank of Srilanka. SANASA is a one of grass root levels well established name in Srilanka. Now there is a Sanasa development bank savings unit in our telecentre. The goal of this savings centre project is eradicate the poverty in Srilanka. At the moment we are accepting only deposits (savings and fixed) only. Kuliyapitiya branch coordinates all the duties with our Nenasala centre. We do Rs.50000.00 loan projects to those who are self-employed. Already our telecntre was able to create client base with more than 500 members as customers with kids, women, men and societies who are facilitating from us. In here we do again multi tasks. Hingurukaduwa is a beautiful small village situated in
the eastern foothills of the Namunukula mountain range in Uva province of Sri
Lanka. LakAruna was formed in 2002 with the main objective of introducing
computer technology to the people of this village as a means of acquiring
education and knowledge to improve their ways of living. From a single computer
with no internet connection and a bunch of curious little faces flocking around
it, who have never seen a computer before in their lives, we have come a long
way, overcoming many challenges along the way.
web site showcases how effectively these children from
a rural setting have taken up the challenges in embracing new technology.

Especially English not being the native language,
students had special emphasis on improving their English skills. As a result,
English knowledge of the students have increased to a level not seen in this
village before. Today our organization is assisting students with their
math & science education as well. We hope to introduce e-leaning techniques
to further enhance this process
Our vision
for the future is to further evolve our Technological education program around
marketable skills while introducing a new sustainable employment model for the
qualified students who do not manage to secure a place in a University. We
think creating IT related employment in a rural village like ours would be an
immense strength to the economy of the village as well as the future IT
education of the younger generation.

We have helped to establish two more IT centers, one
at Miyanakandura Ethpattiya and another at Lunugala colony, which are about 15
km away from our village. ICTA provided the necessary funding for
these centers and we initiated the process and helped them to get setup using
our expertise.
e - Learning Activities
We use e-learning techniques extensively for English
education programs at Lak Aruna. While deploying these methods at our center,
we are also actively involved in improving and developing
new e-learning tools and methods, which would benefit the education system

Implemented by the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka under the
E-Sri Lanka initiative. Teldeniya was one of the rural and disconnected
villages in Kandy district before the implementation of Nenasala in the area.
Managed by the entrepreneur model, Teldeniya Nenasalas’ success story is a
result of the dedication and hard work of the Nenasala staff members over the
past few years.Nandana Bandara Madugalle, a young individual and the oldest
staff member is also a part of Teldeniya Nenasala success story. Nandana, aged
27 is a resident of Teldeniya village. Nandana is the youngest of a family of
Three children whose father is a government Teacher and mother is a house wife.
Nandana has successfully completed his advanced level studies from the
Dharmaraja Collage Kandy and he has followed an IT diploma from the IDM. And

the IT training classes. Therefore by the early stage of his service, Nandana

activities, Teldeniya Nenasala conducted awareness campaigns for all the schools
in the area and as a result, Nenasala could attract a large number of school
students for Nenasala IT training classes. Most of the students are keen on

serve his community with his expertise. Specially, he contributed to co-operate
social responsibility related activities carried out by the Teldeniya Nenasala.
For instance, there was a programme which was focused on benefiting the
children coming with low income families. Nandana volunteered to conduct free
IT training classes for these children. Added to that, a survey research
conducted on these law income groups revealed the fact that main cause for
their poverty is their addiction to drugs and alcohols. Nandana took the
leadership in carrying out a counselling service for the parents of these
families and he conducted parents meetings as he could convince them on their
responsibilities as parents to ensure the future of their children. Added to

respective organizations with Nenasala.. he has helped building a strong
partner network for the Nenasala. With Nandana's ability in building strong
co-relationships with the organizations and institutions in the area, Teldeniya
Nenasala could easily get sponsorships for the activities that they are
planning to launch.
With Nandana's guidance and influence, most of the community has become
frequent users of the Nenasala. Resource mobilization is a significant to a
Nenasala as there are limited resources available and Nenasala has a great
responsibility to serve all the community members. Nandana has managerial
skills in resource mobilization as he is capable of efficient and effective use
of resources available. he has helped with her expertise in finalizing a
resource mobilization plan for the Nenasala and he has always fulfilled his
duties to the Nenasala while ensuring the effective use of Nenasala resources.
Nandana Manages all the financial accounts and documents of the Nenasala
activities and he generates monthly reports on financial transactions which is
really helpful in understanding a financial stability of the Nenasala and
planning out future Nenasala activities. Teldeniya Nenasala has achieved its
financial sustainability and could obtained assets worth over one million due
to its successful resource mobilization Nandana has immensely contributed to
the sustainability and the success of the Nenasala by playing multiple roles.
In every year, Teldeniya Nenasala prepares a activity planner and organize
various projects and activities. Nandana takes the leadership in documentations
and reports generation of all activities and share the responsibilities among
the Nenasala staff. He possesses outgoing personality and he is capable of
maintaining friendly relationships with his co-staff, Nenasala partners and
Nenasala users. Further he has the capacity to work under pressure while
fulfilling multiple roles.
One of the innovations that Nandana initiated is that he implemented an IT
training programme for the journalist in Teldeniya area and he conducted
training sessions for them. He assisted the newspaper reporters in the area to
document their article in computers and communicate with their news agents via
emails and skype. This program directed all the journalists and news reporters
to use Nenasala as their communication centre. It built a cordial relationship
between Nenasala and the journalists and as a result Nenasala has no difficulty
in publicizing the Nenasala events via the public media with free of charge.

My name is Mangalika Kumari
Wijesundara, age 26 and I am a resident of Menikhinna village; a rural village
located in Kandy district Sri Lanka. I have successfully completed my advanced
level studies from the St. Anthony’s Girls College, Kandy and followed diplomas
and certificate courses in diverse fields such as English, journalism,
photography, home gardening, beauty culture, agricultural training, vocational
training, and business management. Added to the list I have successfully
completed IT diploma in Computer operation, Computer Graphic designing,
Computer video editing, Computer Hardware, Internet & E mail.
I joined Hurikaduwa Nenasala: (Telecentre in my
village) on 25th June, 2008 and by that time there was no proper IT operator at
the Hurikaduwa Nenasala. I had completed all the required qualifications to
appoint as the Nenasala operator. As a newly appointed Nenasala operator, I
handled all the IT training programs by that time and most of the courses were
only for school students and kids. Gradually started IT courses for the young
individuals who worked as teachers at the Dhamma School located at the temple
premises. I could expand IT courses for a large number of students and Nenasala
users including youth in the area. Among many IT programs, there were courses reserved
for Buddhist monks, government and non-governmental staff members, etc.
Further, I helped the Nenasala community development initiatives and she
cooperated with number of initiatives: self-employment training camp, health
camp, Blood donation campaign, religious activities, vocational training camps
and agricultural workshops organized by the Nenasala. Today, my role as a
Nenasala operator includes multiple tasks and responsibilities. I actively
participate with Nenasala awareness raising campaigns, Nenasala community
development initiatives, Nenasala IT training programs, etc. Also, I assist all
the Nenasala users who daily visit Nenasala for various purposes such as
communication, information search, IT training. Over the last 3 years of
service, I have improved my out-going personality and maintain friendly
attitudes towards the community in helping them out with their requirements.
Talking about
my Contributions to Digital Literacy and Community Development, I can say that
