Glenanore Knowledge Centre (Glenanore Nenasala) is situated in Glenanore Estate, Haputale.
Haputale, located in central Sri lanka, is 193km from Colombo, the capital of Srilanka.

It is a beautiful place surrounded by hills, tea plantations, waterfalls and tea factories.
The community here mostly constitute of low income tea plantation workers.

It was our ambition to train and depart computer knowledge to the younger generation of these workers who hardly have the resources to attend regular colleges.
The idea of Glenanore Knowledge Centre was to reach these people and show them the path to communication through the internet.
When the centre was started in 2005, we provided free classes and computer usage through voucher system. Though we were able to earn through the voucher system we were not satisfied of our service to the community. We wanted to change the lifestyle of the people through better communication and at the same time show them that they could make some extra income through online jobs.
Then we searched for Business Process Outsourcing Projects through various sources and were able to get a few projects from US, Canada and New Zealand. Since knowledge of English and IT was very poor in Glenanore, we had to settle for simple internet research and data entry projects. We mainly targeted School leavers and housewives and provided them free training for the job. They were happy earning some money and they improved their knowledge of ICT.

Contributions to the community

• Free Training and Job placements for school leavers.
• Basic IT and English Classes for Students
• Low Cost International Calls through Skype and GTalk.
• Available Downloads of government Forms (Birth Certificate, Visa Forms, etc.)
• Availability to access results of Government Exams

Impact on the people of the community

As a result of our training many boys and girls managed to find lucrative jobs in the cities. They have become self confidence and are not afraid to look for jobs further from their home town. Over the years we have trained more than 50 girls and boys and most of them have found jobs in banks, offices and schools.

Sample:-

“I’m Anthony Mercy (age 33) from Glenanore Estate. I started my carrier in 2010 June with Glenanore Knowledge Center. When I started I was scared and didn’t have any knowledge of computers. Now I’m able to do Internet Research, send and receive emails and train newcomers on the project. Through my extra income I’m managing my childrens’ school fees and their other needs. I’m very happy that I got an opportunity to work in Glenanore Knowledge Centre.”

Sustainabilty

Initially the Government of Sri Lanka helped us by giving funds. This has been discontinued now. All these innovative programs were implemented by funds received through BPO projects.
We are proud to say that we have done and continue doing our service to the community around us.

With more help and recognition by way of funds and awards, we can achieve our aim, which is to release into the mainstream a body of youth who integrate their knowledge and skills with social responsibility.

Right from the inception of this venture we strive to achieve the high standard that we had set for ourselves. We aim to excel in our work and bring out the best in all those who come to our centre for help and training.

We understand that to succeed we must venture with confidence and extend our horizons. We pass our success, knowledge and experience to everyone who comes under our fold.

With our eyes firmly set on this ideal, we continue our journey of imparting our knowledge to the less privileged.

Is an online job bank operated in all over Sri Lanka which is aimed to connect rural youths and the organizations in urban areas through the digital media. This project is operated with an eye to serving the remote youths in finding their livelihood free of charge using their native language as the language is a barrier to reach to the modern technology for the remote youths. Under this project rural youths can find their job opportunities through TeleCenters available in the country covering all the rural areas. Upon that the usage of Telecenters is increased drastically as this is the only way for finding a job opportunity for any age , educational level persons without facing communication barriers available in other technological sources.
The job bank site is operated under two main areas.
  1. Job Opportunities available in public sector . (English /Sinhala medium )
  2. Job Opportunities available in private sector.  (English / Sinhala medium)

The way of serving the job seekers and the organizations.
  1. Through the website both Sinhala (native language) and English language users can find job opportunities available in the country for the youths unemployed.
  2. About 4000-5000 job seekers are visiting the site daily and benefited from the site.
  3. Regarding job offers, the well recognized organizations can publish their job advertisements through the web site and find the suitable candidates for the vacancies available with them.
  4. As well as they can get the registered CV s with the site as well as information from the database available with the job bank of job seekers.
  5. Other than this, Mass job campaigns are carried out in all districts in Sri Lanka for connecting the job seekers of age limit 17-48 and in all educational levels .The reputed companies are conducting interviews for the potential job seekers. The employment opportunities are offered to the job seekers within 10 days. These mass job campaigns are organized to address the need of the organizations who need a large number of employees at once to reach their production targets. Upon this way the productivity of the developing country like Sri Lanka is increased and that will directly help to uplift the living standards of the citizens.
  6. We hope to employ about 50 youths in each divisional secretariat per a month and offer employment opportunities for about 1000 youths per a month covering more than 20 divisional secretariat areas per a month. Under this project 1000 families are taken out from the poverty level to the standard living condition of the country and this service is reached to them without causing any cost for them.
  7. While the mass job campaigns are going on, a career guidance programme is going on to educate the rural youths about the prevailing qualification standards for the job seekers as well as the available job opportunities of the country.

The way of serving the Telecentre organizations.
  1. Usage of Telecenters is increased as this site is addressing the needs of the rural youths in all educational levels as well as in all age levels.
  2. Telecenters can contact the job bank and send their job seekers requests to the job bank using digital medias and their requests are addressed by the job bank.
  3. Telecenters can download the job applications of government sector while acknowledging the rural community about the opportunities available in the country.

 Advantages of the web site.
  1. The only web site available in the country which uses the native language as well as the international language.
  2. The only site which is addressing the needs of the labor level as well as executive level job seekers.
  3. This is the site which is available public sector as well as private sector job opportunities at a single site.
  4. The web site which reach to a large number of general public at once and when their job requirements are met ,take steps to fulfill them using the digital means of connecting job offers and job seekers in a developing country which has so many rural remote areas which are not having access to the urban areas.

Hurikaduwa Nenasala, located in Menikhinna is one of the successful Nenasalas (telecentres) implemented by the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka under the E-Sri Lanka initiative. Hurikaduwa was one of the rural and disconnected villages in Kandy district before the implementation of Nenasala in the area.

Hurikaduwa Nenasala was started on 5th July 2008. Thorough the Nenasala, we have rendered a great service to the community. Before the implementation of Nenasala, Hurikaduwa remained as one of the least connected rural villages of the Central province where Computers and IT was considered as a luxury. Yet, over the past 3 years of time with Nenasala services, digital literacy rate of the village has being improved and remains in a stage of satisfactory.
Our Nenasala is not a place reserved only for IT courses. Our vision is to take the ICT to the rural community and empower them with the dividends of ICT.  For the moment we deliver 14 different IT courses and conduct language classes to teach English. Following is the list of courses:

Background:
Gurusinghe Arachchige Deepika priyadharshanee, aged 33 serves as the women telecentre manager since year 2005. She hails from a lower-middle class family, married to a business man and her family is residing in a remote village named “Sooriyawewa” in Hambantota district in Southern province of Sri Lanka. Deepika is employed as a graduated instructor at Ministry of Youth affairs in Sri Lanka in her profession and holds a bachelors degree from University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka and completed her Masters in Social sciences.
Followed by an newspaper advertisement to submit proposal of interest to set up Nenasalas (Nenasala is the brand name for ICTA initiated telecentres in Sri Lanka) in remote villages in Sri Lanka, Deepika was summoned for an interview at the Information & Communication Technology Agency’s (ICTA: Government body mandated to ICT development of the country) in year 2005. By fulfilling basic qualifications and considering her interest and enthusiasm to serve her community by making available ICT facilities, she was given 4 computers and a communication unit to set up a Nenasala in her village. On 18th May 2005, Deepika opened her Nenasala for her community which plays a role of an IT knowledge hub for 14 remote villages in her area. Being supported by ICTA to set up a Nenasala, she was assigned with the main responsibility of taking the dividends of ICT to every village and every citizens of Sri Lanka as to improve the quality of life of the grassroots and enhance the social and economic development of the people. It was a challenging task as ICT was a totally new experience and most of the people had never heard or seen a computer in their life. Deepika was committed to her assigned duties and courageous to take the challenge as she launched a Nenasala awareness campaign in her village schools and public places as to raise awareness among the community. She started IT training courses for students in her village as she identified children as an effective communication channel to send the message of new developments in ICT in their village to the parents and adults. Today, Deepika is an experienced telecentre manager and a successful entrepreneur with over six years experience in telecentre activities.

Contribution to Digital Literacy and Community Development:
Implemented under the entrepreneurial / commercial model, Sooriyawewa Nenasala has only4 computers in its initial stage. Today Deepika caters to 15,000 people living in 22 different villages by upgrading her Nenasala with 14 computers. Turning her Nenasala into a multi-service community information centre, Deepika provide wide range of services such as access to internet, e-mail, telephones, fax, photocopy, computer training classes and other ICT services. Village of Sooriyawewa has limited ICT infrastructure and ICT resources. Therefore Deepika’s Nenasala is one of the significant locations in the area. One of the main activities of Nenasala is conducting IT training courses for students and youth in the village. So far, Deepika has managed to train nearly 800 students in basic IT training and 200 youth in web designing courses. It has increased the IT literacy rate among grassroots and enhanced socio-economic development of the community as well. In order to offer a recognized certification for the IT training programs of Nenasala, Deepika has managed to register her IT training courses in Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka and conducts IT trainings by employing qualified lectures. Therefore, the community find the training conducted at Nenasala really helpful and recognized. In her way forward, Deepika identified the fact that, though she had taken lot of efforts in bring down grassroots to her Nenasala, there was considerable amount of people who have not visited her Nenasala. In a closer look into these missed out portion, Deepika noted that those people live with extreme poverty and ICT is not at all affordable for them. In order to reach this unreached community, Deepika launched her new project “Nenasakmana” –a mobile telecentre in year 2009. The so called “mobile telecentre”- a small van-sized lorry incorporating four laptop computers powered by a solar panel and with connectivity provided through a dongle is an ideal solution to serve the rural areas of southern province Sri Lanka where most of the people are isolated from the digital world. It is commendable that Deepika is committed to offer services via her mobile library free of charge for the grassroots. Launch of this mobile telecentre is another step taken to allow poorest sections of the society to reap benefits of Information Technology. Deepika is a fine example to rest of the women telecentre managers in many ways. She was always ready to take challenges and risks and she was convinced that without taking the risks and challenges she will not be able to pave her way forward. She was brave to invest all she had earned when she was to set up Nenasala. She was courageous and hard working to convince people on benefits of ICT which was a difficult task by the time she started her Nenasala. More than generating an income and concentrating on financial gains, she was concerned about serving her community as she travelled village by village with her mobile telecentre offering her service free of charge.

Leadership, Partnership and Resource Mobilisation:
Deepika’s leadership and her capability in building partnerships and mobilising her resource is evident as she has managed to convert her Nenasala into a successful business which was started with only 4 computers six years back. Today her Nenasala is equipped with 14 computers and she possesses over 2 million assets. She has empowered her community by delivering her services trough out 22 remote villages in Hambantota district. Deepika exposed her leadership not only in managing her Nenasala, also in working with follow Nenasals as well. By considering Deepika’s successful operations in Nenasala, tremendous support and efforts to bridge the digital divide among grassroots, Deepika was appointed as a Nenasala ambassador for southern province by ICTA. With her new appointment she is one of the leading Nenasala owners from the southern province who helped out ICTA to carry out Nenasala Development Task Force: a network of regional Nenasalas which helps each other in efficient and effective operations. Further, Deepika had always understood the value of entering into partnership with rest of the organizations as it could make various possibilities as she move forward with her Nenasala activities. Best example is that Deepika well maintains her partnership with ICTA, one of the leading government organizations in the country. ICTA has helped Deepika in many ways including grant opportunities she received in implementing her innovation: ‘Mobile Telecentre’ to reach the unreached community of poor and marginalised in southern province of Sri Lanka. Entering into a partnership with ICTA with assigned deliverables, she was successful in her resource mobilization, fund raising into her community service and ultimately leading the way forward in her business. Not only ICTA, Deepika work in close contact with Divisional secretariat office in Sooriyawewa and institutions like Vocational Training Authority which has added more recognition to the services she delivers through Nenasala. Especially as she managed to register her Nenasala centre with Vocational Training authority she was able to deliver recognised certification to the IT trainings that she conducts in her Nenasala. In carrying out her Nenasala awareness campaigns, Deepika is in partnership with community based organizations and societies as it has the capacity to add more value and recognition. It has helped her making people convince on benefits of using ICT in their day today communication needs and rest of the activities.
